Challenging 1915 $10 Indian NGC PF66
This design is exceedingly popular and highly prized among collectors for its unique appearance and esthetic beauty. Very medallic by design, this eagle is most representative of what the designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, envisioned for a $10 coin. The obverse of the coin shows the head of Liberty crowned with an Indian war bonnet, while an eagle with folded wings appears on the reverse. The 1915 “Matte Proof” is the rarest proof ten dollar Indian to obtain in the 8-coin set from 1908 to 1915. With an estimated survival rate of only 50%, very few of the original mintage of 75 coins exist today in high grade. In fact, the combined PCGS/NGC population in PR66 is a scant 10 coins with four coins graded higher. The 1915 matte surface is somewhat coarser relative to other matte and satin finishes seen from 1908 to 1915. The example offered here has exceptionally beautiful golden tones with no spotting. Only one coin in PR66 has appeared since October 2006 when a PCGS example brought $103,500. The Collector’s Universe Price Guide values this date at $110,000 in PR66 condition.
